Where can I buy Germ meal or hominy chop in P.E or Uitenhage? I have got a very old mare who can't keep her condition anymore. I have tried everything except germ meal, Equifeeds does not stock it.
The horse: 27 year old THB mare, 15.3 hands. Teeth are O.K and vet says she's healthy, has been dewormed.
Current diet: (morning and evening the same)
2kg of Romix 10% Equichaff Slice of lucerne
Stays out with stables open, wears blanket in cold or rainy weather.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi nickynoo, Welcome to the forum. The only place I could come up with is ECA Co-op. The closest branch seem to be at Paterson, but from what I could find out, hominy chop is going to be a very expensive product. Let me know if you manage to find it and what it costs. I haven't yet asked everyone I know, so I might still come up with something closer. I'm no expert nutritionist, but I like to add a little bit of soya cake meal to my horse's feed, just as a supplement. If she get older I would increase that. Anyone's thought on that, good or bad idea?

Hi there Sorry I forgot to add my supplements She does get 100g of full fat soya with every meal and 50ml of sunflower oil. I really can't find any place in P.E thats selling germ meal or hominy chop. And also hear it goes for around R100 per bag. That still fine because I mean wow look at the the other feed cost! Agree with you there. I'm fortunate that non of my horses get Sandy Chaff at the moment, only good lucern and grazing. But a few months ago, two of them did get sandy chaff and some of those bags were extremely dusty. To the point that when I were working with it, that I had to stand back a bit for the dust to settle.

yeah the shandy chaff is not so nice anymore I wet mine before feeding it. if anyone is battling to get condition on a old horse buy the Equifeeds Golden Years and add 100ml full fat soya to every meal. It works like a bomb!

I was about to try to get some Shandy Chaff, but reading this forum, I think I will pass on that one.
Recently moved from Kyalami and am finding it very frustrating to get good feed. I live 40kms west of Grahamstown, and there are only 2 places in Ght to buy food. The one is Phoenix, (Monti) and the feed changes every time you buy. The other is the local Feed store, but caters mainly for sheep, cattle, game, etc. He does make up a meel for horses but not very good. Contains Bran, crushed mielies and Molasses. Would ideally like to have Epol or similar. I only have one horse, that gets +- 3kgs per day. Any suggestions. Also, to get hold of Full Fat Soya, Micronised Barley etc, is be near impossible.
Slightly off the subject (sorry) - where could I find lucern in or around Grahamstown.

mmm... I transported a horse to Grahamstown last week for a guy who has a stabling business there and I asked him where he gets his feed from. He also told me the same that you can't really get some locally and what you get is rubbish. He drives to P.E and buys at Equifeeds for a whole months supply, maybe you should find out from other horse owners and if they get from P.E or elsewhere organize that you can get from them.

I sniff a good business opportunity here, if I lived in Grahamstown I would try to contact Equifeed and find out if I can't market their products.

The thought has definately crossed my mind on more than one occasion. Also have looked into supplying basic vet and tack products. Have already spoken to the Gent at Xenia, but still waiting for their price list. It was supposedly send in January (?). They have some lovely products. There is a definate gap here. Also the Port Alfred area has loads of horses and only 1 place that I know of sell Epol cubes in Bathurst. Anyone willing to back financially ? I dont have the financial resources. I think you would have to buy the feed in and sell it on. Nickynoo, problem with driving all the way to PE, I only need 2 bags a month. So spending R200+ on petrol doesnt make economic sense. Who is the chap with the stables, I may get in touch with him. You can e-mail me. alison@deklerk-devilliers.co.za
